It is important to raise awareness about health each year, especially on World Health Day. However, it’s not just words that we need to take care of ourselves, we also need to take action to improve our wellbeing: exercise, eat healthily and get screened.
The World Health Organization (WHO) was founded on 7 April 1948 and celebrates World Health Day every year. The theme for World Health Day 2024 is ‘My health, my right’. This year’s theme was chosen to champion the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services, education, and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions.
WHO in Hungary
Hungary has been a member of WHO since its inception, opening its office in Hungary in 1992. In 2016, WHO established a global service center in Budapest to further support health systems in accessing information, data collection and professional projects.
Every year, the WHO focuses on an issue of public health importance on World Health Day, known internationally as World Health Day. This year’s campaign highlights the growing threat to the right to health of millions of people worldwide. Epidemics, disasters, wars and conflicts are destroying more and more lives, causing death, pain, hunger and emotional distress. The burning of fossil fuels is not only responsible for global warming, but also directly harms people’s health. Statistics show that toxic substances emitted by indoor or outdoor air pollution claim one human life every 5 seconds.
Health is a fundamental human right
Currently, more than 140 countries have constitutions that recognize health as a fundamental human right, but not all of them adopt and implement laws that guarantee people’s right to access basic health services. That is why the theme for World Health Day 2024 is “My Health, My Right”.
