On September 21, people around the world raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease. In our laboratory in Szeged, we also consider it important to take part in promoting awareness, as the illness affects not only those diagnosed but also places a significant burden on entire families.

What is Alzheimer’s disease and what are the first symptoms?

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia in old age, gradually and insidiously taking control over everyday life. Its most characteristic symptoms include frequent forgetfulness, confusion, and disorientation in time and space. At first, these signs may seem minor, but over time they can pose serious obstacles to daily living.

An increasing global health challenge

Alzheimer’s disease primarily affects the elderly, but genetic predisposition also plays a significant role in its development. Research suggests that women are more frequently affected, partly due to their longer life expectancy. Family history and chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure (hypertension) or diabetes, can also increase the risk.

Prevention strategies

Although the onset of the disease cannot be completely prevented, much can be done to reduce the risk and slow its progression:

  • Mental activity: Brain training, reading, solving crosswords, or learning new skills can stimulate cognitive function.
  • Establishing routines: A regular daily schedule and familiar surroundings provide a sense of security for those affected.
  • The role of family members: Patience, loving support, and seeking professional help are crucial in caregiving.
