Every year on June 14, the world pays tribute to blood donors. This day reminds us of the essential role of those who selflessly give blood as a single donation can save up to three lives. A safe and sufficient blood supply is vital for healthcare, as blood cannot be artificially produced – it can only be obtained as a human donation.

Blood supplies require continuous replenishment because blood components (such as red blood cells, plasma, and platelets) have a limited shelf life. In cases of accidents, surgeries, cancer treatments, or blood disorders, patients often rely on blood products to survive. During the summer months, when many people are traveling or on vacation, blood donations often decline, even though the need remains unchanged. This is why it is so important for more people to join the community of regular blood donors.

Who can become a blood donor? To become a blood donor, several criteria must be met, starting with the appropriate age and normal body weight. In Hungary, anyone who is at least 18 years old but has not yet turned 65, weighs at least 50 kilograms, and passes the health screening is eligible to give blood. Before donation, every volunteer undergoes a brief medical examination, which includes checking blood pressure, hemoglobin levels, body weight, and overall health status. It is important that the donor does not have a fever, is not taking antibiotics, and shows no signs of infectious illness.

The donation process is quick and safe. The actual blood collection takes about 5–10 minutes, during which 450 ml of blood is drawn using sterile, single-use equipment. The entire process – from registration to resting – takes approximately 45-60 minutes. First-time donors are encouraged to stay well-hydrated, have a meal beforehand, and bring personal identification documents (ID card or address card). After donating, a short rest period is recommended, and it is best to avoid strenuous physical activity for a few hours.
